Yes, you can find the mountains’ namesakes in the old-growth hardwood forests—one of the largest tracts west of the Adirondacks. Fall is great. Then we would walk about a mile to another trailhead and transition right in to the next segment: Lake Superior Trail. This 2 mile loop follows along the banks of the Presque Isle River as is plunges in spectacular fashion down to Lake Superior in it’s final mile. When it is completed it will be 4,500 miles long, so one could walk to North Dakota or New York. you really make us feel like we could enjoy a night of serious camping… it’s never really been on our radar before!
